EMERGENCY SITUATIONS
If you are a JET in a small town, it is a good idea to have your supervisor take you to the local police station for an introduction. If an emergency situation arises, the police will already be aware of your presence in the area, and most likely, familiar with where you live. The police in Shiga are very friendly and willing to help foreigners living in their jurisdictions. Many police organizations make special efforts to get to know foreigners living in their area and promote exchange.

It is also a good idea to be aware of the location of the police box(es), or koban, in your area. If you are ever out and encounter a dangerous situation, go directly to the police box. They are marked with "KOBAN" and a red light outside the entrance. An emergency foreign language translation service can be reached by telephone from the police box.
EARTHQUAKES & NATURAL DISASTERS
Japan is a nation of earthquakes. They are usually minor occurrences, but please use the following precautions to prevent damage or injury:
  • Secure standing furniture to the wall with brackets.
  • In the event of an earthquake, immediately turn off the gas.
  • Keep valuables in a safety deposit box at your bank.
  • Prepare an emergency kit in case of evacuation (first aid, change of clothes, etc.) and place it near an exit.
